Description of CME Course

The maternal death rate is on the rise around the world, and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) plays a major factor. In the US, PPH accounts for 11% of maternal deaths and is the leading cause of death on the day of birth. PPH is one of the most common diagnoses resulting in medical malpractice allegations, accounting for 15% of maternal injury claims. Many perinatal providers fail to administer proper interventions that help stop bleeding early, before hemorrhage occurs. Failing to actively manage the third stage of labor, infrequent or incomplete postpartum assessments, and not identifying the root cause of excessive bleeding are negligent claims involving PPH litigation. This is the eighth of 14 modules within our PPH series. This course focuses on the initial PPH management strategies that help stop bleeding. Risk reduction strategies and recommendations to decrease PPH-related malpractice allegations are highlighted.
