Description of CME Course
According to the 2015 Institute of Medicine Report, there is substantial evidence that 1 in every 10 diagnoses is wrong. To improve the quality of healthcare and patient safety, physicians should know the causes of diagnostic errors (cognitive, system-related, overconfidence) how to find them (root cause analysis), and how to address them. Solutions involve changes that can be made by individual physicians, and patients can play an important role in the diagnostic process to prevent errors. In addition, healthcare system improvements are needed in addressing solutions to diagnostic errors. Five areas of commonly misdiagnosed medical conditions (as prescribed by the Florida State Board of Medicine) are discussed with examples and possible solutions.
