Description of CME Course
Since the CDC recommended expanded HIV testing, screening of patients for HIV will increase. In addition, with the approval by the FDA of rapid HIV tests and in-home HIV tests, screening will take place both in primary care and at-home settings. With this increased screening, patients will need information about HIV tests, HIV testing windows, accuracies of these tests, interpretation of test results, and subsequent actions regarding the results. Patients will increasingly turn to their primary source of information about HIV tests, the primary care physician. To improve physician understanding of HIV testing, part 1 of this course addresses the time course of HIV infection, how it relates to HIV testing windows, and the testing guidelines. Part 2 of this course addresses the science of HIV tests, specifically the types of tests, how each type works, and the accuracies of the tests. With this information, physicians will be better informed and equipped to educate patients about HIV tests.
Diplomate Engagement
